From the Beginning, Tuesday, March 2, 2010

I thought this might be an easy way to keep everyone updated on how we are doing.

Corey and I first found out we were expecting on Halloween of 2009. On December 11th, at our first ultrasound we found out the amazing news we are expecting twins. This was quite the suprise for both of us as there are no twins in our family and we weren't on any kind fertility drugs. But we are so excited and felt so blessed with the news.

February 19th Corey and I went in for our 20 week ultrasound. This is the appointment where you can find out what you are having and they do all the measurements of the babies to make sure they are growing as expected. We found out we are expecting a boy and a girl. Baby A (the girl) is low in my belly, and Baby B (the boy) sits above my belly button. It was so amazing to see them kicking and moving around. They are very active in there which I am now really starting to feel from the outside.

The last thing they measure during this appt is your cervix which is kind of the plug keeping the babies in and the world out. We also found out at that time I had a short cervix. Most pregnant women have a 3-5cm cervix. Mine was 2cm. They told me to take it easy and they didn't know if they needed to be really concerned or not because they didn't know if my cervix was getting shorter or if it was just naturally short. We made an appt to come back in two weeks and have the cervix rechecked. However, our Dr. was also going to be consulting with a high risk specialist to see if there was anything else we needed to be doing or not doing.

I got a call on Thursday, February 25th and was asked to come in the next day because the high risk Dr. wanted to do a follow up ultra sound and see if there were any changes.

On Friday, February 26th, we found out my cervix had dropped from 2cm down to 1cm. At that point they said there was a very high risk that the babies would be born before 24 weeks. There was only one thing they could do and that was what they call a rescue cerclage, which is a procedure where they go in and actually put a stitch in your cervix to hopefully keep it closed. It's a risky procedure but it was really the only option we were left with.

I was admitted to the hospital right away and they monitored me for contractions on Friday night in the hospital and then I had the procedure on Saturday morning. They were hoping to take some of the cervix and stitch it closed again just to give a little more support but they weren't able to do that. They stitched up the 1cm that was left.

One of the risks of the surgery is they accidently break your water and that didn't happen so that's good. I was monitored in the hospital for 48 hours and since everything seemed to be going ok they discharged me on Monday, March 1st. Now I am home and resting.

There is still a chance that something could go wrong in the next couple of weeks which would not be good. The babies need to be at least 24 weeks before there is a chance they can survive and right now I am only at 21. We go in each Friday now to check the stitch and have an overall check up of how things are going.

Corey has been a saint through all of this. He really is the rock that I lean on. He's been so strong and has taken over so many of the duties around the house that we used to share. I can't imagine going through this experice with anyone but him. He's the best husband/father/friend that I could ask for.

We are also very lucky to have such wonderful, helpful, loving, supporting families. It's been so great knowing we can rely on them to help us through this journey. And our friends have been there for us every step of the way as well. I couldn't ask for a better family or friend support system. Thank you all for everything you've done. Corey and I appreciate it so much.

We will continue to keep everyone posted so check back. Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers.

Love

Joscy and Corey
