Glucose Testing

Well yesterday was my one hour glucose testing which tests for gentational diabeties. At 6:25am I drank some really sweet water (lemon lime) and an hour later they drew some blood. Well, I didn't pass. The high end of passing is 140 and I was at 159. So at that point they said I had to take another test today that tested for a longer period of time.

So, today I had to fast for 12 hours before they start the test. At 9 am they did a fasting blood draw as a starting point. Then I drank another really sweet drink, orange flavored this time. After you finish the drink they draw your blood once an hour for 3 hours so you still can't eat. Ugg, that is really hard for a pregnant woman. :) 12:15 they drew my last draw.

Lunch usually comes at 12:30 so I thought I'd just wait until lunch. At 12:40 I called the nurses desk to see if lunch was here cause I was STARVING!! She said she'd check on it. At 1:00 I hadn't heard so I called out there again and asked them if I could just eat something becuase I have a ton of food in my room. My nurse came in and said yes I could eat something. They had put my lunch on hold because of the test but I could eat something from my room.

Thankfully the nurse came back about 5 min later and said my results were back and I PASSED. Yeah, I was so worried about having gestational diabeties. I was relieved that that I didn't have to worry about that.

Also today I got to leave my room for the first time. I've been granted permission to take a wheel chair out of my room for a half an hour. So, after Corey was done with work he took me for a ride up to the roof where they have a big patio that patients can use. It over looks the entire harbor and it's just beautiful. It felt so nice to be outisde and in the fresh air. And the weather was so nice I was in a zip up hoodie and that's it. It was so nice.

The babies looked good on the monitor tonight and the uterus was calm so today was a pretty good day. One day at a time and so far they are doing wonderful. I couldn't ask for more. Happy Wednesday tomorrow.

New Room

Well I moved into my new room today. Only one bed in this room so no roommates. I have a fridge, a microwave, a nicer bed, new TV, DVD player and just an overall nice space. I hope to utilize this room for at least another month.

My morning was pretty quiet but the afternoon today was full of visitors. Corey came first, then Mandi came for a visit, then Jen, Andy, Bob and George came after Bob's 1 year pictures, and then Dad came with some triffle from Mom and some goodies that he'd picked up. It's so nice to have visitors. They really do make the day go by faster. Becky came later on her way back from the cities.

The cut back my monitoring again so I'm only being monitored once a day for an hour. That sure is nice because the twins REALLY hate the monitors. But their heartbeats looked perfect and my uterus was perfectly quiet so I was happy. I just took my nightly pill and I'll be heading to bed soon.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend. Happy Monday tomorrow.

Busy Friday

Evening all, they say that bedrest can be boring. Well today was so busy I didn't have time to relax all day. My day starts at 6am when they come in with my one med and monitor the babies heartbeats and monitor for contractions. This usually only lasts half an hour but the babies were not cooperating this morning so it took two nurses and until about 7:30 to get it all done. Breakfast comes about 8 and then my first visitors of the day came at about 8:20.

Jacie and Melissa came and visited from work and Erin stopped on her way into work. It was great to see them. After they left my aunt Denise stopped to see me while Jeff was at a docs appt. Also great to see her. I got in a shower after that and then the nutritionist came in to visit with me about ideas for me to eat more. So we came up with some ideas for some snacks and when good times would be to eat them so we've started that. We'll see if I can gain some weight.

The NICU doc also stopped in today to discuss how things have changed since last week. No way are we out of the woods but he said things have improved. Every day things get better. So that was good.

Joanna stopped by around lunch and chatted and brought me ginger cookies. I had one, it was fabulous! This afternoon was more monitoring and I finally got to just sit for about an hour. Corey came after work and then Rob, Mel and kids all came for a visit. It was so nice to see them. Emily is getting so big and she's adorable. Corey left about 6, then I had more monitoring and am now relaxing.

So I don't have a lot of medical updates today. The kids moved around and kicked ALL day but no contractions. The doc said I may be able to go out for wheel chair rides next week. We will see how it goes.

Happy Friday all and enjoy the weekend.

25 Weeks

Happy 25 weeks everyone. Today the babies weigh about as much as a rutabaga. They are growing and getting bigger every day. I'm thankful for every day they are still able to grow inside of me.

My doctor and the specialist were both in to see me this morning. They said I'm here for at least 5 weeks. If I make it until 30 weeks they will consider sending me home. One of the main reasons they are keeping me here is because of the distance we live to the hospital. Currently the babies are so small I would only need to dialate to about 3-4 cm in order for me to go into active labor and deliver. At 30 weeks I would almost have to be fully dialated for them to deliver which would give us more time to get to the hospital. Big difference. But they said they will revisit that at 30 weeks and go from there.

The specialist also said that she believes if I didn't have the cerclage put in the babies would have delivered by now because that is really the only thing holding things together right now. She said with a single babies she's seen people go to 36 weeks but she doesn't believe that will be my case. Anything over 30 weeks right now is a blessing.

The nutritionist was just in to give me some more food options. Turns out I'm not gaining enough weight. Who would've thought that the only time I CAN'T gain enough weight is when I'm pregnant with twins. I think they've totally squashed my stomach and it doesn't allow me to eat as much. Crazy.

Monday I will take the gestational diabetes test. This is a normal test that every pregnant woman takes. I would've taken it this week but they say the steroids that I was given last week can sometimes affect the test. So that will be Monday. They may also send in a physical therapist to give me some exercises to do to keep my strength up in bed.

I have to say I'm learning a lot in the hospital. The nurses are so helpful. I'm in good hands. Hope everyone is having a good week.

Monday, March 22nd

Hello all, just thought I'd send out a little update. Still in the hospital on bedrest. Catherater came out yesterday and my IV came out this morning so as of right now I'm just one one oral medication to try to calm my uterus every 8 hours.

The hospital staff has been amazing. They are so helpful and answer all my questions. My doc stopped in this morning just to see how things were going. She told me to just keep up the good work.

Corey stayed with me last night again which was nice. I didn't get much sleep from getting up to pee every 2 hours but he slept ok. I think it will just be me here tonight. Becky also stopped on her way back from the cities. She stayed at our house last night so Corey could stay with me. Thank you Becky.

I figure I will shoot for a nap today before lunch and then maybe see what kind of Law & Order is on this afternoon. Maybe I'll be awake enough to read my book. Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers.

SMDC Living

Thought I would update all of you on my new situation. Came into the docs on Thursday for our ultrasound. First, the babies looked wonderful. He is 1lb 10oz and she is 1lb 9oz. Great weight for their gentational age. Doc said the babies look perfect. Becky came with for that part and thought it was great. She hadn't seen it before. Both babies are still completely sideways with both heads on one side. We got pictures.

Then they did the vaginal u/s and found that although the cerclage is still in place there is a hole where a portion of the cervix has opened and I'm about 1cm dialated. Not good news. So, the doc wanted me to be admitted to the hospital in order to receive the steriod shots that would help the babies lungs develop just in case. She also wanted me to stay until Wednesday until the high risk doc gets back.

I checked into the hospital and they hooked me up to the machine that tracks contractions and it turns out that I was having a bunch of contractions and I didn't even know it. I couldn't feel a thing. Doc said less than 5 percent of people have contractions and not feel them. I guess I fit into that category. If this was a regular pregnancy I would say that's awesome. Since it's not I was bummed. So now I was officially in pre-term labor at 24 weeks. Not good. They started an IV and started me on magnesim to try to stop the contractions. I stayed on that for 24 hours and also am taking an oral medication. At about 3:30am things finally started to calm down. Since then things have been relatively quiet. I'm still on the oral meds but no longer on the magnesium. I've also received both shots of steriods in case the babies are born this week.

So, the goal now is just to try to keep my uterus from contracting because this causes changes in the cervix and we don't want the stitch to start to pull or tear. So far doc says it's not but she wants it to remain that way.

We also met with the NICU doc on Thursday about options if the babies were born this week. Stats are not good with babies born this early but there have been good outcomes. We had a good chat with him. We are just hoping not to have to see him for another couple of weeks.

So it sounds like I will be here until the babies are born. Hoping that will be awhile. I will keep everyone updated. The last couple days have been very emotional for both Corey and I so we've been kind of out of communication. I will keep you posted more often now. Corey set up the lap top here at the hospital for me so I'm all connected.

24 Weeks

Good morning all. Well we made it to Goal #1. The babies are 24 weeks today and about the length of an ear of corn. Man it's a good thing they crunch up in little balls when in the belly because two ears of corn sticking strait out would be so uncomfortable.

So 24 weeks, the babies have hit viability. This means that going forward there is medical technology available to help them if they deliver early. This week they have a 50% chance of survival, each weeks that percentage goes up. By 26 weeks I know it's 70%. So, it's still very early and I hope they don't come out any time soon but I am so thankful to know that if they do they can be helped. It gives me great hope.

Today we do have another appt. Hopefully my sister didn't drink too much green beer on her birthday last night and will make it to see them on the ultrasound. I will update tonight or tomorrow on what we find out today. If things look fine, I'll be having dinner with Corey somewhere before we come home. If things look like they have changed I will be in the hospital for another couple of days for some steriod shots to help they babies lungs develop. I will keep everyone posted.

Yesterday I sat on the deck for an hour in the sun. It was 80 in sun and it felt awesome. How do we get 80 in WI in March? I'm not complaining. It's supposed to be another beautiful day today so I'm hoping to get outside for a little bit just to soak up some Vitamin D. Love this weather.

Friday's Appt

Happy Saturday all. We had another follow up appt yesterday and got some good news. The Dr said everything looks the same. The stitch is right where it should be and I'm not dialated at all so that was positive. The Dr made a comment that she's putting her positive hat back on. That was a scary statement because of course we had no idea she didn't have it on.

So, going forward, our next appt is this Thursday which will be exactly 24 weeks. 24 weeks is a huge milestone and goal #1 for us because at that point, if the babies are born, there is at least a chance that the Dr's can help them breathe. I believe at 24 weeks there is a 50% chance that the babies can survive and be totally healthy and normal. However, there is also a 50% chance that they run into lots of complications. So, 24 weeks is a big milestone but we are shooting for much more than that.

The Dr. also told me to pack a small overnight bag whenever I come in for an appt going forward because if they have any sense that something has changed they will admit me in the hospital and do two rounds of steroid shots to help the babies lungs develop. They try to do this as close to when they babies are born as possible but it could be any time starting next week.

My appt on Thursday will consist of a growth u/s where they check both babies to make sure they are both growing enough. This is standard with twins at 24 weeks. Then they will check my cervix length again to see if that has changed and then we'll meet with the Dr. I think Becky's coming with for the u/s portion. It will be fun for her to see them.

It's another foggy Saturday in Superior. Corey's attending our god-daughters 2nd birthday party this afternoon. Her birthday is the same day as Becky's, and Corey's Grandpa's, March 17th. I'll miss the party but I'm sure she will understand. Corey's going and bringing presents!!! I'll be working on my paper which is due tomorrow for school and possibly taking a nap. :) Enjoy the weekend everyone. I'll write more this week.

23 Weeks

Morning all! We made it to 23 weeks today. The babies are the weight of a mango this week. The emails I get related to their size usually goes by length but decided to go with weight this week. So, the babies make up just over 2 pounds of the 20 I've gained. Love it. :)

My email also said the babies can hear and feel movement now so by the time they are born hearing the dogs bark shouldn't bother them because they'll be used to the barking. Very interesting.

It's warm but foggy in Superior today. I've got a 12 page paper to finish by this weekend so I'll be working on that today and at some point I'll do the dishes. It's amazing how many dishes two people can make in one day.

We have another appt tomorrow so hopefully I'll be able to update again this weekend with more good news. Or at least news that nothing has changed since last week. Have a good Thursday all.

Love Joscy

Tuesday with Sun

Hi All-
Not much to report (again, this is a good thing). Corey got to feel both babies move this weekend which was really exciting. My sister was over last night and also felt one of them move. It's so much fun to share that experience with others since I now feel it so often.

Last night Becky and Mandi came over. Mandi brought a pizza rollup that she made and it was FABULOUS! We all sat around and watched The Bachelor wedding. Always entertaining!!!

Tonight I've got a few freinds coming over to keep me company for awhile and I spent over an hour chatting with my friend Margaret down in FL. She said it's supposed to be in the 70's by Friday. It's been really nice here but not that nice. But I'm not complaining. It's close to 50 and the sun is out. Perfect weather.

The dogs and I were out on the deck earlier enjoying the Vitamin D. I signed up for Netflix and have been enjoying Law & Order through my computer. CSI is being sent to me in the mail. I've got lots to keep me busy.

Hope everyone is enjoying the week so far.

Friday's Appointment

Friday we had a follow up appt at the Dr to check on the stitch. Dr said that the stitch looks good and there are no signs of infection or irritation. Yeah, we finally got some positive news. The Dr continues to keep me on very limited activity. Basically, I get up to shower, use the bathroom, and get something to eat. After laying down all week if felt weird to be out of the house on Friday. We celebrated with a Pepsi from the Arby's drive through.

We go back again this Friday where they will again check the stitch and make sure things continue to look good.

It's another beautiful weekend this weekend. Corey made omelets and bacon for breakfast and let me sleep in. He is working on painting the brick of our spare room downstairs and hopefully getting outside for a 4-wheeler ride. I told him I'd give him all the love and support I could from the couch. What would I do without him?

The dogs continue to keep me company and enjoy the sun. Have a great weekend everyone.

22 Weeks

We are 22 weeks pregnant today which means the babies are the length of a spaghetti squash. Yes, I've got two squash inside my belly. Too fun.

So far it's been an uneventful week which I am so thankful for. Minimal spotting and no cramping or contractions. We go back to the Dr tomorrow for a checkup. She's going to check the stitch and make sure it's holding properly and just make sure everything looks fine. Hopefully I'll be able to post something afterwards with good news.

It's been so beautiful this week. Yesterday our changing table was delivered. I stepped outside to check it out and didn't want to come back in. The sun felt good. Mom has been visiting and bringing me lunch every day this week and my friend Jodi is coming for dinner tonight.

Thanks again to all of you for your support through this.

From the Beginning, Tuesday, March 2, 2010

I thought this might be an easy way to keep everyone updated on how we are doing.

Corey and I first found out we were expecting on Halloween of 2009. On December 11th, at our first ultrasound we found out the amazing news we are expecting twins. This was quite the suprise for both of us as there are no twins in our family and we weren't on any kind fertility drugs. But we are so excited and felt so blessed with the news.

February 19th Corey and I went in for our 20 week ultrasound. This is the appointment where you can find out what you are having and they do all the measurements of the babies to make sure they are growing as expected. We found out we are expecting a boy and a girl. Baby A (the girl) is low in my belly, and Baby B (the boy) sits above my belly button. It was so amazing to see them kicking and moving around. They are very active in there which I am now really starting to feel from the outside.

The last thing they measure during this appt is your cervix which is kind of the plug keeping the babies in and the world out. We also found out at that time I had a short cervix. Most pregnant women have a 3-5cm cervix. Mine was 2cm. They told me to take it easy and they didn't know if they needed to be really concerned or not because they didn't know if my cervix was getting shorter or if it was just naturally short. We made an appt to come back in two weeks and have the cervix rechecked. However, our Dr. was also going to be consulting with a high risk specialist to see if there was anything else we needed to be doing or not doing.

I got a call on Thursday, February 25th and was asked to come in the next day because the high risk Dr. wanted to do a follow up ultra sound and see if there were any changes.

On Friday, February 26th, we found out my cervix had dropped from 2cm down to 1cm. At that point they said there was a very high risk that the babies would be born before 24 weeks. There was only one thing they could do and that was what they call a rescue cerclage, which is a procedure where they go in and actually put a stitch in your cervix to hopefully keep it closed. It's a risky procedure but it was really the only option we were left with.

I was admitted to the hospital right away and they monitored me for contractions on Friday night in the hospital and then I had the procedure on Saturday morning. They were hoping to take some of the cervix and stitch it closed again just to give a little more support but they weren't able to do that. They stitched up the 1cm that was left.

One of the risks of the surgery is they accidently break your water and that didn't happen so that's good. I was monitored in the hospital for 48 hours and since everything seemed to be going ok they discharged me on Monday, March 1st. Now I am home and resting.

There is still a chance that something could go wrong in the next couple of weeks which would not be good. The babies need to be at least 24 weeks before there is a chance they can survive and right now I am only at 21. We go in each Friday now to check the stitch and have an overall check up of how things are going.

Corey has been a saint through all of this. He really is the rock that I lean on. He's been so strong and has taken over so many of the duties around the house that we used to share. I can't imagine going through this experice with anyone but him. He's the best husband/father/friend that I could ask for.

We are also very lucky to have such wonderful, helpful, loving, supporting families. It's been so great knowing we can rely on them to help us through this journey. And our friends have been there for us every step of the way as well. I couldn't ask for a better family or friend support system. Thank you all for everything you've done. Corey and I appreciate it so much.

We will continue to keep everyone posted so check back. Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers.

Love

Joscy and Corey
